What is a metal folding machine used for?

A metal folding machine is used to bend and form sheet metal into accurate shapes and angles. It is commonly used for roofing, siding, flashing, façades, ventilation, and custom sheet metal fabrication. The correct machine can be selected based on the material thickness, working length, part design, and production needs.

The machine should be selected based on the sheet length, material type, material thickness, bend complexity, and expected production volume. A manual folder can be useful for smaller or on-site work, while powered and CNC-controlled folders can be better suited to repeated production. For complex bends, an up/down folder may provide more flexibility.

The maximum thickness depends on the model, working length, material, and material strength. For example, CIDAN lists the MEGAPRO with capacity for up to 6 mm steel on the 3.1-meter model. Other models are designed for thinner sheet metal, so the machine specification should be checked before production is planned.

A metal folder is generally used for short and medium-length sheet metal parts, while a long folding machine is designed for much longer panels and profiles. Long folders can be useful for roofing, façades, and large architectural components where long, accurate bends are required. CIDAN’s Thalmann range includes working lengths from about 3.2 to 12.2 meters.

The required material thickness, working length, production volume, bend types, machine footprint, tooling, automation, and operator needs should be reviewed first. The complete production process should also be considered. For roofing and architectural metalwork, equipment such as folders, shears, decoilers, rollformers, and material handling systems may need to work together.
